Advice Bureau Volunteers

Salvos Legal (Humanitarian) Advice Bureau Volunteer Solicitors and Law Students

Salvos Legal (Humanitarian) is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified lawyers and law students to volunteer with us in 2019

Salvos Legal currently operates evening advice bureaus at various locations around Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. However, we are also looking to expand our services to other locations next year. We are always looking for skilled lawyers to join us so we can continue to provide legal services to those in need of our guidance but are unable to access other service providers and cannot afford a lawyer.

We practice in the areas of:

  • Immigration and refugee law
  • Criminal law, including domestic violence
  • Family Law
  • Care and Protection
  • Centrelink matters
  • Bankruptcy
  • Housing; and
  • Other civil matters

We understand that many interested lawyers will not necessarily have previous experience in the above areas of law. However, this would not be a barrier to volunteering as we provide initial and ongoing training and education for our volunteers and partners, and all of the legal advice and assistance given at advice bureaus is supervised and signed off by a Salvos Legal (Humanitarian) staff lawyer.

We would welcome expressions of interest from qualified and suitably experienced lawyers who would like to make a difference. However, we also welcome those who are starting out in their career or perhaps drawing down or otherwise looking to make a contribution to the community, as well as bright law students to provide paralegal services that facilitate the running of our advice services.

We ask that our volunteers be astute, ethical, compassionate and have good EQ, communication and legal skills. Our expectation is that volunteer lawyers possess a current practicing certificate, have practice experience in one of our key practice areas or an interest in humanitarian law and preparedness to receive training from us. Most importantly, we seek a firm commitment from our volunteers that they attend an evening advice bureau at least once a month.

If you do volunteer with us you can expect in return the support of the Salvos Legal (Humanitarian) team, respect and gratitude of the community and the wider profession for providing much needed coal face pro bono services, up skilling in humanitarian legal practice, to be challenged, to feel part of an important ‘gap’ service, and the camaraderie of Salvos Legal (Humanitarian) and your co-volunteers.

For more information about when and where our advice bureaus operate, please see our locations. Most of the bureaus are open in the evening from 6-9pm, making it convenient to volunteer on a regular basis.

We look forward to hearing from you.
